Indiana was admitted to Statehood, December 11, 1816, under President James Madison, with a constitution that forbad slavery and required government funding for public schools. Its admission revived the practise of admitting a “slave” state for every “free” state within a year of each other to maintain the delicate balance of power in the Senate.
